The Top Banana The Story of a mutant superfruit fighting a freaky fungus!

Our Big Plans

This is not just a film about bananas. It is a film which will provide the understanding and knowledge of one of the biggest issues of our times - food security and sustainability - to as wide an audience as possible. It will question some of our assumptions and undermine some of our prejudices. By the time you finish watching the film, you will understand the complexities – the science, economics and politics - of the subject, so that you can be part of the solution.

This is not just a film. The film will be the focus and platform from which we will raise a campaign around the core issue of how we feed the world in a sustainable, humane, and environmentally friendly way. Our plan is to build an alliance of organisations who have an interest in this project – ranging from NGOs to corporations. From these partnerships we will create the drive and space to show this film in as many cinemas, on as many televisions, and in as many screenings as possible. This will be supported by a website, which will pull and link all the entities together, and create a space for debate and discussion. We will create a lot of noise around the film, and start an international conversation about the future of our food supplies.

We know that we can achieve all this in an effective strategy, as our team has a great track record in making and distributing documentaries of this kind, so that they reach out to a wide and relevant audience and become a topic of debate in the international media. Christo Hird, our executive producer has a lot of experience making award-winning, opinion-forming, policy changing films which have a much bigger reach than television alone. Emily James, our director, has a proven track record of taking complex subjects such as globalisation, international trade, and climate change, and making them into entertaining and accessible award-winning films. And Robert West, our outreach consultant, is a leading expert in constructing campaigns and organising initiatives around powerful documentary films to ensure a wide and strategic outreach linked to long-term engagement.

We already have support from four NGOs: ACTION AID (actionaid.org), CONCERN (concern.net), FAIRTRADE FOUNDATION (fairtrade.com) and BANANALINK (bananalink.org.uk) who will play a key part in helping to give the film public visibility and bring it to as wide an audience as possible.
